Friendship Festival Off to a Tremendous Start in Slovenia

June 25, 2026, Radenci, Slovenia — The Kasparov Chess Foundation Friendship Festival officially opened today in Radenci, Slovenia, bringing together players, coaches, families, and chess enthusiasts from around the world for the start of a unique celebration of chess, education, and international friendship.

The opening day marked the beginning of an ambitious eleven-day festival that combines high-level competition, youth development, educational programming, cultural exchange, and community engagement, all core elements of the Kasparov Chess Foundation’s mission to use chess as a bridge between people and nations. The festival runs from June 25 through July 5 and features the International Open Tournament, Kasparov Chess Day, the Albin Planinc Memorial Blitz Tournament, an International Kids Tournament, a Trainers Conference, and a world-class Chess Camp.

From the moment participants arrived at the Congress Center in Hotel Radin, the atmosphere reflected the festival’s name. Players representing dozens of countries gathered not only to compete, but to connect, learn, and share their passion for the game. The Opening Ceremony welcomed guests from across Europe and beyond before the first round of the International Open Tournament got underway.

Throughout the day, tournament halls, hotel lobbies, and common spaces buzzed with conversation as old friends reunited and new friendships were formed. Young players had the opportunity to meet titled competitors, coaches exchanged ideas, and families enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere that has become a hallmark of Kasparov Chess Foundation events.

The Friendship Festival represents a significant milestone for KCF and its partners. Months of planning and collaboration culminated in an opening day that showcased the power of chess to unite people from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds. What began as a vision to create a truly international chess festival in the heart of Europe has now become a reality.

The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. The festival has attracted players from more than 30 countries, including grandmasters, international masters, ambitious juniors, and recreational players eager to be part of this inaugural event.

While the competition on the board is already underway, the coming days promise even more excitement. Players and visitors can look forward to Kasparov Chess Day, special educational activities, the Albin Planinc Memorial Blitz Tournament, an International Kids Tournament, and appearances by distinguished guests from the chess world. The festival will conclude with a five-day international training camp led by some of the game’s most respected coaches.

Most importantly, the opening day demonstrated that the Friendship Festival is about far more than chess results. It is about building connections, creating opportunities for young players, promoting international cooperation, and celebrating the values that make chess one of the world’s most universal languages.

As Round 1 concluded and participants gathered to analyze games, share stories, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Radenci, one thing became clear: the first Kasparov Chess Foundation Friendship Festival is already living up to its name.

The Kasparov Chess Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to all players, families, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, partners, and organizers whose dedication and enthusiasm helped make the opening day such a success. We look forward to sharing more highlights, memorable moments, and inspiring stories throughout the festival. This is only the beginning.
