-- Eighteen generous supporters from as near as New York City and as far away as Indonesia faced Garry Kasparov, the world's greatest chess player, in an exciting simultaneous exhibition on June 12th. And while Kasparov won on all 18 boards, it didn't spoil the mood of the evening or the Foundation's mission to help transform chess into an integral part of children's education.
The unique fundraiser was initiated via eBay Giving Works, eBay's dedicated part of the site for nonprofit auctions. Winning bids were sold for $2,000 per player with all proceeds benefitting the Kasparov Chess Foundation efforts to promote chess education in the schools.
The event, which took place at Manhattan's famed New York Athletic Club, offered winners and up to 3 guests each a complete evening of festivities, including cocktail hour, full sit down dinner, photos and autographs with Mr. Kasparov, as well as a certificate commemorating the event. New York City Sports Commissioner, Kenneth J. Podziba, welcomed the guests on behalf of Mayor Bloomberg's office to the nearly 100 people who were on hand to celebrate the evening.
