-- The Second Annual All-Girls National Chess Championships, which took place in Chicago, May 14 - 15, 2005, was a major step forward in erasing the gender gap that exists in competitive chess . The tournament, organized and sponsored by the Kasparov Chess Foundation, in association with the USCF and Chess Wizards, featured competition among 209 girls, ages 5 through 18 from public, private and home schools throughout the United States.
"All girls who participated were truly winners," explained Michael Khodarkovsky, president of Kasparov Chess Foundation. "This tournament is so important to the game of chess. We are creating an environment where young women can flourish. The friendships they formed, experienced gained and memories they'll share from this weekend will last a lifetime," he added.
